Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) warned of possible tsunami waves up to three meters on Saturday after a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck Nagekeo District, with alerts issued for parts of East Nusa Tenggara, West Nusa Tenggara, and South Sulawesi.

The agency said the 15-km-deep quake was centered offshore about 30 Km northeast of Nagekeo District, East Nusa Tenggara Province, at 4:58 a.m. Western Indonesia time (WIB).

"Based on tsunami modeling, the earthquake has the potential to trigger a tsunami in East Nusa Tenggara, South Sulawesi, and West Nusa Tenggara," BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center Director Wijayanto said in Jakarta on Saturday morning.

BMKG issued a 0.5-to-3-meter alert for northern Manggarai, northern Ngada, Ende, and East Flores in East Nusa Tenggara, and for Jeneponto in South Sulawesi.

Areas under an alert for waves below 0.5 meter included Bima and Dompu in West Nusa Tenggara, Wajo in South Sulawesi, and parts of East Flores.

BMKG estimated the first tsunami waves could arrive between 5:02 a.m. and 6:01 a.m. local time, depending on the affected area, Wijayanto said.

BMKG issued its first tsunami warning at 5 a.m., two minutes and 16 seconds after the quake, followed by a second warning at 5:09 a.m., Wijayanto said.

The strongest shaking, measured at VII on the Modified Mercalli Intensity scale, was reported in Aesesa, Nagekeo; Riung, Ngada; and Mbay, causing residents to flee and minor building damage.

Shaking reached VI MMI in Wolowae and Bajawa, while Ende, Borong and Ruteng experienced intensity V, BMKG said.

BMKG urged residents in areas under the 0.5-to-3-meter alert to evacuate immediately to higher ground, while those under the lower alert should stay away from beaches and riverbanks.

"Remain calm, avoid unverified information and stay away from buildings that are cracked or damaged by the earthquake," Wijayanto said.
