Denpasar, Bali (ANTARA) - Prosecutors from the Denpasar District Attorney's Office in Bali have demanded a 10-year jail term for British citizen Baath Jarnail Singh, 52, over the trafficking of 1.4 kilograms of cocaine.
The sentence was read by Public Prosecutor Finna Wulandari at a hearing on Tuesday, with the agenda being the reading of the indictment.
"We demand that the panel of judges declare the defendant Baath Jarnail Singh legally and convincingly proven guilty, with a 10-year prison sentence reduced by the time the defendant has been detained," she said.
According to her, the defendant was found guilty of violating Article 114 paragraph (2) of Law Number 35 of 2009, in conjunction with Article 604 paragraph 2 letter a of Law Number 1 of the Criminal Code, in conjunction with Law Number 1 of 2026 concerning criminal corrections.
The defendant unlawfully accepted or served as an intermediary in the trafficking of more than five grams of Class I narcotics.
In addition to imprisonment, the prosecutor also demanded that the defendant pay a fine of Rp1 billion (US$54 thousand) or six months in prison.
The indictment explained that the defendant was arrested by Denpasar Police officers on February 14, 2026, in room 11 of The Legian Mas Beach Inn, Legian, Kuta, Badung.
During the search, officers found five packages of cocaine with a total net weight of 1,419.79 grams stored in the defendant's bag and suitcase.
Police also seized two electronic scales, two cell phones, and several items suspected of being used to store and package narcotics.
The Bali Police Forensic Laboratory confirmed that all the evidence tested positive for cocaine.
The defendant's urine test also revealed the presence of ecgonine methyl ester, a cocaine metabolite.
During the trial, Singh admitted to coming to Bali on the orders of an individual identified as MIC, who remains a wanted person (DPO).
He was instructed to receive and store the cocaine packages until they were retrieved by an individual named Muhammad Ali.
In return, he received Rp10 million (US$540) in cash for living expenses while storing the goods, along with HK$2,000 transfers from MIC on eight to ten occasions.
The trial will continue next week with the plea reading from the defendant and his legal counsel.
